 | 29th Jul 2006 | Alder Valley (15 images)
Alder Valley Services came into being on 1st January 1972, following the merger of Aldershot & District Traction Co and Thames Valley Traction Co to form the grandly named Thames Valley & Aldershot Omnibus Co Ltd. A livery of cherry red and cream was introduced for new deliveries and repaints, replacing Tilling red and A & D's two tone green.
Images include the smart short lived cherry and cream livery, plus Aldershot & District and Thames Valley colours.

 | 17th Jul 2006 | Crosville (16 images)
Some images mostly from West Wales.
The operations and vehicles from Western Welsh depots at New Quay and Newcastle Emlyn were transferred to Crosville in April 1972. Note how the Western Welsh fleetnames have been painted out but the border remains.

 | 15th Nov 2006 | Hants & Dorset (40 images)
Images from the early 1970s of this very interesting company.
Neighbouring operator Wilts & Dorset had shared common management with H & D since 1964, but was fully absorbed on 1st October 1972.
Gosport & Fareham, (Provincial) sold out to the NBC on 1st January 1970 and administration passed to H &D, but Provincial remained as a separate entity operating from Hoeford.
On 30th April 1973 H & D took over Winchester based independent R.Chisnell & Sons, better known as King Alfred.
Photos of King Alfred and Wilts & Dorset vehicles in their pre-NBC liveries, but with H & D fleetnames, taken after the above dates are included in this collection, plus a few from Shamrock & Rambler.

 | 19th Jul 2006 | Jones, Aberbeeg (15 images)
When Jones sold out to NBC in April 1969 it was surprising that control of the company, (who favored AECs and Leylands), fell to Red & White rather than Western Welsh, with whom the company had a close working relationship.
R & W transferred some of their buses, which looked very smart in Jones' livery. They retained R & W fleetnumbers, whilst the Jones fleet was unchanged.
New vehicles ordered by R & W entered the fleet in Jones livery but with R & W fleetnumbers and a 'J' suffix e.g. RD1472J.

 | 13th Jun 2006 | King Alfred (10 images)
The Winchester based independent whose routes and buses passed to Hants & Dorset in April 1973. Photos taken after that date of buses in King Alfred livery but with Hants & Dorset fleetnames, can be found in my Hants & Dorset collection in this gallery.
Fortunately still remembered thanks to the Friends of King Alfred Buses, FoKAB.

The years before National. A nostalgic look at famous liveries and operators at the formation of the National Bus Company, before drowning in a sea of poppy red, leaf green and the odd blue. Some operators quickly put National style fleetnames on their old liveries. A few well known independent companies disappeared at the same time, absorbed by their bigger NBC neighbours. Sadly, some of these major operators have vanished since privatisation.
Over the coming months more images will be added. So if your favorite isn't here, please be patient. It may be next.
I'm afraid that in my early and youthfull years of photography, I wasn't as diligent as I am now in respect of keeping records! Dates, locations etc. In viewing these collections you will see question marks against some of the photo descriptions. If you can add any extra info, or confirm my remarks, I will be extremely grateful. |
